Know Our Ministers: Social Media Report Cards of Our Ministers
With the Ministers officially sworn in to serve the new government, we made an attempt to analyze their social media presence. In doing so we have come up with the Social Media Report Cards of the Ministers. We took the listing of the Ministers from the government document issued by the President of India. Among the Ministers who were sworn in on the 30th of May, there were 44 Ministers from Lok Sabha, amongst these 44 (Male = 39 Female = 5), 42 had social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram). This blog is dedicated to analyzing the 42 ministers’ (Male = 37 Female = 5) social media presence. The two Ministers who don’t have any social media presence are Mr. Som Prakash from Hoshiarpur (Punjab) and Mr. Rameswar Teli from Dibrugarh (Assam).
We created Social Media Report Cards of all Winning candidates from this elections (in this blog we will be discussing only the Ministers’ Report Cards, stay tuned for the more extensive Winning Candidates Report Cards). Below is the sample of Social Media Report Card of our honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi; similar report cards for all Ministers have also been developed.
The interactive version of all the 42 Social Media Report Cards can be viewed via this interactive graph (all red markers in the map have a report linked) or click the image below.
Both the youngest Minister and the youngest Minister with a social media account are Smt. Smirti Irani (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram). The graph below captures the distribution of the age of the Ministers (the interactive version of the graph is available here). The oldest Ministers sworn-in are Mr. Som Prakash from Hoshiarpur (Punjab) and Mr. Santosh Kumar Gangwar from Bareilly (UP). Both are 70 years old, Mr. Gangwar’s social media profiles being Twitter, Facebook, with no Instagram presence.
Among the Ministers, 42 have an account on at least one social network (among Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter), 40 are on at least two of these networks, 24 are on all three networks. Among the 42 Ministers who have social media presence, 33 have their Twitter handles verified (9 are non verified), 38 have their Facebook verified (2 non verified), and 10 have their Instagram verified (14 non verified).
To understand the overall social media presence of the Ministers, we analyzed their Twitter followers & tweets, Facebook Followers & Likes, Instagram Followers & Posts, and Oldest account. Below is the list of accounts with their counts in various categories. Total number of followers of all Ministers’ Twitter accounts put together is about 83.44M and the total number of unique followers are 49.53M. The total number of tweets posted by all Ministers overall is 367,376. These accounts made a combined number of 43,742 tweets this calendar year. Among these tweets (from 1st Jan, 2019) , the tweets which contained Media were 20,599 (of which original tweets were 18,995, RTs were 1,599 and quoted statues (re-tweets with replies) were 5 in number). Thereby, of the tweets posted by these accounts this year, 47% contained some Media content.
